After a day of public hearings, one thing is clear: there is no evidence that Judge Brett Kavanaugh has committed the crimes of which he has been accused.
Instead, we saw an accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, unable to remember key details of the night of the alleged assault. We know that there is no corroborating witness to the alleged sexual assault, or even that the alleged party in question took place. The people that were named as attending the party are denying any knowledge of the incident or of the party. There is no evidence that Kavanaugh attended such a party.
We saw a man, Kavanaugh, passionately protest his innocence. The evidence he presented was more than enough to cast doubt upon his accusers, and his indignation at having his reputation “destroyed” was genuine.
Of course, when confronted with Kavanaugh’s willingness to defend himself, the Democrats and their allies are now complaining that the tone of his remarks were unbecoming of a potential Supreme Court justice. Had he continued a dispassionate defense, they would have accused him of being indifferent and cold, even “robotic.”
We’re reminded that the late Justice Antonin Scalia was often accused of being intemperate in his remarks and in his opinions. We’ll take passion on the side of justice over the hypocritical outrage of the Left.
We saw a Democratic minority willing to sacrifice the ideals of this country for the sake of power. For over two hundred years, the standard in this country has been a presumption of innocence. Suddenly, because Democrats object to Kavanaugh’s judicial philosophy, that principle has been upended for ideological convenience.
Ironically, many of those that are willing to declare Kavanaugh’s guilt on the basis of Ford’s testimony alone were supporters of the Clintons. President Bill Clinton’s treatment of women, including alleged cases of rape, were excused and ignored because of politics. That does not excuse or exonerate Kavanaugh, but it exposes the hypocrisy of those on the Democratic side that claim to support #metoo and “we believe women” – apparently only those women that are politically convenient to believe.
We saw a Democratic minority try to force the majority into delaying the vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court with calls for an FBI investigation. If these calls were at all sincere, the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee should have directed their ire at Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA). Feinstein should have passed along Ford’s allegations to the FBI and the rest of the Judiciary Committee the moment she received them. Feinstein’s protest that she was trying to protect the confidentiality of the Ford letter was undermined by the leak to the media by the senator or her staff and the senator assisting Ford in finding an attorney.
After six FBI background checks that never turned up even a hint of the crimes of which Kavanaugh was accused should demonstrate the effectiveness of the FBI’s abilities. Either the FBI is competent, in which case the previous background checks were sufficient, or the FBI is incompetent for the task and therefore further involvement by them is counterproductive.
But as noted above, the Democrats are not sincere in seeking a delay. They wish to drag the matter out for political gain in the midterm elections and in the hope that more accusers (possibly with more credibility) will come forward.
The Democrats have failed to make their case and the American people saw a political party that was so hell-bent on seeking power that they would abandon any pretense of fairness to destroy a nominee to this country’s highest court. The #resist impulse has driven them to complete irresponsibility and even to the brink of madness.
Republicans are now obligated to move swiftly to confirm Kavanaugh’s nomination.
The Republicans cannot allow the Democrats to destroy an innocent man’s reputation for political gain. They cannot allow the Democrats to get away with destroying the confirmation process, because it will only encourage the Democrats to do this again to the next nominee. The Republicans cannot allow the Democrats to defeat the Kavanaugh nomination because it is now a matter of supporting the principles on which our system of government was founded over the screams of the angry mobs the Democrats have irresponsibly whipped up. The Republicans cannot allow the Democrats to win this time because they owe it to a man who has sacrificed nearly everything because his president has asked him to serve our country at the highest level.
In short, Republicans must approve Kavanaugh’s appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court because it is the right thing to do – regardless of the consequences.
We understand that the Republican Party may suffer losses in November for standing up for Kavanaugh. Democrats will likely use the Kavanaugh nomination to try to persuade women who are swing voters to vote for the Democrats. We’ll remind the Republicans that if they let Kavanaugh fall, it’s likely that the Republican base will not turn out for the November elections, just like in 2006.
We’re heartened that moderate senators like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) are willing to stand with Kavanaugh against the Democrats. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) should follow the lead of state Sen. Leah Vukmir (R-Brookfield) and demand that the Senate vote to confirm Kavanaugh as soon as Senate procedures allow. Any delay now would be an unconscionable and unpardonable injustice.
