My Questions for Senator Ron Johnson
A missed opportunity of the Impeachment Trial of President Donald Trump earlier this year was when the U.S. Senate chose to not hear from witnesses. Hearing from witnesses would have added a couple weeks to the trial and it would have been a political inconvenience for both political parties for different reasons.
But calling witnesses would have answered many of the questions that many of us have about the events of the January 6 coup attempt.
One person who wants some answers is Gladys Sicknick, the mother of fallen Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died following the Capitol Insurrection. During a meeting where Mrs. Sicknick unsuccessfully tried to convince Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), to support a bipartisan commission to investigate what happened on January 6, Johnson reportedly did promise to learn answers to Mrs. Sicknick’s questions.
That’s an interesting response from the senator because that’s exactly what a commission would be created to do. But since Johnson opposes a commission, and opposed the Senate calling witnesses during the Impeachment Trial, there are questions I still would like to ask and have answered.
Here are my questions for the senator:
- What was President Donald Trump doing during the riot?
- Was it Vice President Mike Pence who called out the National Guard ?
- Did the Secret Service have the vice president surrounded with guns drawn?
- How close did the mob get to the vice president? Was the Secret Service preparing to open fire?
- Did House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) call the president? And what was Trump’s response? Did he really say, “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are?”
- Did Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) not have enough security on staff? If so, why?
- Did the Capitol police let protesters in? If not, please explain the videos that seem to indicate police did? And if they did, why did they?
- Why were you going to vote to not certify the election, but then voted for certification? What changed your mind that afternoon about Arizona’s election?
These are the questions I would like to hear answered. I understand why my fellow Republicans don’t want to ask them, but these are the consequences we reap for allowing bad behavior.
And allowing these questions to linger won’t make them go away. They’ll just linger in Democrat advertising for all of 2022. So let’s get everything out ASAP. It’s both the politically smart and right thing to do.
