Brewtown Blues
Brewtown suffered for years
With many tears in our beers
Will no one take us to the promised land?
Since 1982, not even a chance
From off the bench he came
The smartest manager in the game
“I’ll show you how baseball should be played”
And Craig Counsell was his name
But the first season fell short
And the second won no award
The third showed some promise
But every season a miss is a miss
Suddenly in the fourth year
The team turned around
Don’t look now everybody
But we’re postseason bound!
Counsell led us to Chicago for 163
Then over the Rockies in a sweep
But then the Dodgers came to town
And Brewers’ hopes ended one game down
Never fear, the Mighty Counsell is here!
We will get them next year!
Just you wait and see
We’’ll win a World Series!
Alas, another season, another season short
Not tops in the division,
Nowhere near Series winners
The season ended in the Wildcard
And broke our hearts
But again, there was hope for Spring
Never fear, the Mighty Counsell is here!
We will get them next year!
He will get us the Series ring!
We came close against Atlanta
Our former winning team
— But the hitters couldn’t hit
— Brewtown said, “Aw, shit.”
Guess we’ll just wait for next year.
But next year was a bust.
Our offense bit the dust
In the standings we were looking up
Some fans grumbled they’d had enough
However, we did not fear
The Mighty Counsell had another year
What tricks on opponents could he play
Just to give us our postseason days
Counsell did his best
And the mighty Crew
Found bats to hit
And hitters, too
But his best fell short after only one
And the cry went up, we’ve lost another one
The players went home without a ring
Brewtown looked once more towards Spring
Because there’s no reason to fear
The Mighty Counsell is here
We will get them next year!
Just you wait and see
We’’ll win a World Series!
But there is no hope this Winter for Spring
Hope died for a World Series ring
The crowds of Brewtown went silent
Wondering where our chances went
For the Mighty Counsell is no longer here
He’s gone to drink Budweiser beer
There his name Cubs fans will shout
For the Mighty Counsell has sold out
We hope he’s allergic to the ivy.
