In a release issued Wednesday, Governor Scott Walker announced the administration is now accepting applications to fill the Milwaukee County Sheriff vacancy. The vacancy was created when David Clarke resigned on August 31 to take a position with America First Action, a super PAC supporting President Donald Trump.
“Applicants should outline in their cover letters what professional and academic experiences qualify them to serve as Milwaukee County sheriff and describe their civic activities and community involvement,” the release states. “Application materials must be received no later than Wednesday, September 27, 2017.”
Acting Sheriff Richard Smith had not decided as of Tuesday’s press conference whether he will seek the position. US Marshall Kevin Carr, a former top aide to Clarke, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Dan Bice that he was interested in applying for the position. Earnell Lucas, a vice president of security with Major League Baseball and a former captain with the Milwaukee Police Department, also told the Gannett newspaper he would be interested in applying for the position.
Lucas was one of two declared candidates for sheriff in the 2018 election. The other candidate, Judge John Siefert, told Bice that he was not interested in applying for the position.

Walker’s appointment to the position will serve as interim sheriff to complete Clarke’s term which ends in 2019. The election for sheriff will be held in November 2018 with a primary (if needed) in August 2018. The office of county sheriff is a partisan position in Wisconsin.
