So it’s come to this with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and its continued assault on dairy farmers and the dairy industry in general.

Cheese is Rape.

Those aren’t my words, but those of PETA in its latest campaign announced over the weekend.

Contrary to popular belief, female cows produce milk only when they’re pregnant(Editor’s note: this is false, pregnant cows do not produce milk) or nursing. They make milk for the same reason that human women do: to feed their babies. Cows who are imprisoned on dairy farms are forcibly impregnated through artificial insemination again and again on rape racks. Rape racks. All for your milk, cheese, and yogurt.

PETA investigations have shown that farm workers kick, whip, and jab laboring mother cows and others who had just given birth. Eyewitnesses also filmed workers attaching chains to unborn calves’ legs when their mothers had difficulty giving birth and yanking the babies out of their birth canals, causing the laboring cows to cry out.

The mothers are not allowed to nurse their babies. Instead, their infants are stolen from them, usually within hours of birth. Male calves, who are considered worthless to the dairy industry, are often sold for veal. Otherwise, they’re raised to be killed for beef. Females are typically fed a milk replacement and eventually sentenced to the same sad fate as their mothers.

While absurd, this is consistent with what PETA is known for these days when it comes to its campaigns against the dairy industry.

In the past, they published false claims that milk could give you cancer, specifically prostate cancer. That backfired spectacularly in 2000 when the group was forced to remove billboards featuring former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (then a recent prostate cancer survivor) after he threatened to sue them.

PETA had to publicly apologize.

Just last year, they urged you to drink beer over milk, claiming it was healthier for you. To point this fact out, they placed billboards near UW-Madison which had just been named America’s hardest drinking “Party School.”

The billboards, originally scheduled to last a month in Madison, only lasted a week. Once again, PETA was forced to publicly apologize.

Earlier this year, they claimed that milk was the “drink of white-supremacists” because Christoph Waltz’s Nazi character in the film “Inglorious Basterds” asks for a glass of milk wherever he goes.

So with all these nonsense claims against the dairy industry, why do we point this insanity out? Because PETA, for some strange reason, gets far more media attention then they deserve for their antics and crackpot theories.

Second, this is an attack which goes straight to the heart of Wisconsin. Agriculture, especially dairy based agriculture, accounts for nearly $44 billion to the state’s economy. 90 percent of all milk produced by Wisconsin dairy farmers is made into over three billion pounds of cheese annually. 90 percent of all that cheese is exported to other states and countries around the world.

Is the life of a dairy cow glamorous? Hardly, but to equate the artificial insemination of a heifer to the physical brutality of rape is a new low, even for PETA. Not only that, but PETA does actual sexism in the world a disservice by comparing dairy farming to things such as sex trafficking, third-world military rape squads, and other abominations. Also note that they refer to calves as “babies.”

Try as PETA might, cows are not people. To make a moral equivalency between the two in the name of animal rights and “Vegan Advocacy” is lunacy at its highest level. It also begs the question: does PETA believe spaying and neutering pets deprives them of their “reproductive rights?”
