A new television ad by Appeals Court Judge Brian Hagedorn’s campaign for Wisconsin Supreme Court targets the attempt by liberal special interests to gain a majority on the court.
“Liberal special interests want to take over our Supreme Court and are backing Lisa Neubauer because she will support their partisan agenda,” said Lexi Ardis, campaign manager for Judge Brian Hagedorn, in a statement Friday. “Voters have a better choice in Judge Hagedorn. He will keep politics out of the courtroom and uphold our Constitution on the Court.”
Hagedorn is facing Appeals Court Judge Lisa Neubauer in the April 2 election to replace retiring Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Shirley Abrahamson. Despite Neubauer’s claim she opposes outside money spent on her campaign’s behalf, a number of liberal special interests are spending considerable amounts to win this seat with the long term goal of establishing a liberal majority.
The court currently has a 4-3 conservative majority. Justice Dan Kelly, a conservative, is up for re-election in 2020 on the same day as the Wisconsin Presidential Primary. Given the likelihood of a competitive Democratic primary and the likelihood of a relatively uncontested Republican primary with President Donald Trump, Democrats will have a substantial turnout advantage in that Supreme Court election. That makes this year’s court race important for conservative hopes of maintaining a majority.
Groups such as the Greater Wisconsin Committee are attacking Hagedorn because of his adherence to the teachings of his Christian faith, including serving on the board of directors for a school with a code of conduct for the staff, and for giving speeches to a conservative Christian public policy organization falsely accused of being a “hate group” because it opposes same-sex marriages.
The release of Hagedorn’s ad attacking liberal special interests comes on the day after former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder was in Wisconsin campaigning for Neubauer. Holder, who served during the Obama Administration, leads a group that is dedicated to Democratic control of the redistricting process in key states after the 2020 census. Holder’s organization has pledged to spend $350,000 on Neubauer’s behalf.
Here is the television ad, “Takeover,” with a transcript provided by the Hagedorn campaign:
Liberal special interests are trying to take over our Supreme Court.
They’re backing Lisa Neubauer because Neubauer will support their partisan agenda.
Neubauer’s Washington allies threaten to throw out laws and reforms they don’t like – turning Wisconsin’s Supreme Court into their political playground.
Fortunately, we have a better choice: Judge Brian Hagedorn. Judge Hagedorn will keep politics out of the courtroom and uphold our Constitution.
