Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke resigned yesterday shortly after WISN-AM’s Mark Belling broke the news on his program Thursday afternoon. Clarke has made several appearances on WISN-AM as a fill-in talk show host in addition to his work as an author, Trump campaign surrogate, a Fox News commentator, a public speaker and as county sheriff.
Clarke has not yet indicated what is next in his public career, although he has said an announcement will be made next week. Both Belling and WISN’s Dan O’Donnell have said that it was unlikely that Clarke was taking a position with the Trump Administration, but Clarke is expected to remain in the public eye.
Politico, however, is reporting that Clarke is expected to take a position with the Trump Administration. “David Clarke, the controversial outgoing sheriff of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, is expected to take a job in the Trump administration, according to two sources familiar with the matter,” Politico reported.
“It’s unclear what job Clarke will take in the administration, but one of the sources said he’s expected to join the White House,” Politico said. “Clarke likely won’t be offered a Senate-confirmed role because his nomination would face opposition from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.”
However, Carol Costello of HLN said a source in Homeland Security said Clarke is not being hired by that agency.

Clarke had been previously considered for a position with President Donald Trump’s administration. However, Clarke announced he was accepting the position prior to a formal appointment to the Department of Homeland Security. In the midst of the controversy, CNN reported Clarke plagiarized portions of his masters thesis on homeland security. Clarke then withdrew his name from consideration.

The Washington Post is reporting Clarke is likely to take a position with an outside political group that supports Trump. They also report that Clarke is unlikely to join the Trump Administration.
With Clarke’s resignation, Governor Scott Walker will now have the opportunity to appoint his replacement. The next election for Milwaukee County Sheriff will be in November 2018 with an August primary election if needed. The position is a partisan office, meaning that candidates for sheriff run as members of a political party.
Despite being appointed by Republican Governor Scott McCallum, Clarke ran four times and won as a Democrat in heavily Democratic Milwaukee County.
