Ryan Owens, a professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, announced Monday he is running for state Attorney General.
“We have a leadership deficit in this state that’s turning into a freedom deficit,” said Owens. “I’m a conservative professor and constitutional lawyer. I’m not a politician. I’m running because Wisconsin deserves an attorney general who will put our freedoms first. Josh Kaul repeatedly put his political goals ahead of our freedom, safety, and prosperity.”
Owens joins fellow Republican Eric Toney, the District Attorney for Fond du Lac County, in seeking the GOP nomination. The winner of the Republican primary in August 2022 will likely take on the Democratic incumbent Josh Kaul.
Prior to becoming a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Owens taught at Harvard University and worked for former Governor Tommy Thompson.
Along with announcing his candidacy, Owens announced endorsements from former Lt. Gov. Margaret Farrow and three former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justices: Justice Dan Kelly, Justice Michael Gableman, Justice David Prosser, Jr.
