This coming Saturday, September 9th, is the Annual National Day of Remembrance for Aborted Children. The importance of this prayer service and day of remembrance hits close to home – quite literally – for me. Here’s why: 1,286 aborted babies are buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Milwaukee thanks to some brave Milwaukee native pro-lifers who found them in 1984 and 1988 and gave them a proper Christian burial.
But thousands of other babies that were aborted in Milwaukee were never afforded this final recognition of their life and dignity.
In fact, the house where I grew up in is located in the North West corner of the city. Little did I know that across the tree line from my house aborted babies were being cremated at a pet cemetery and crematory. I used to play in those woods. It wasn’t until I grew up and got involved with Pro-Life Wisconsin that I discovered through Monica Migliorino Miller’s book, “Abandoned: The Untold Story of the Abortion Wars
On top of the revelation that potentially thousands of aborted babies had been cremated next to my childhood home, I recently looked at Pet Lawn’s website and made a chilling discovery. Under the history section of their website it says that in 1967 Dick Bernier bought the business and installed the crematorium. He was the owner/operator for the next few decades (when the aborted babies were being cremated). The chilling discovery comes here though… the website claims that Dick Bernier died on Jan. 22nd, 2010. As most pro-lifers are aware, January 22nd marks the infamous anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in 1973. This man who had been cremating aborted babies across the woods from my house died on the anniversary of abortion’s nation-wide legalization.
So we’ll pray and remember the 1,286 babies at Holy Cross Cemetery, but we’ll also pray for the thousands of other aborted babies here in Wisconsin and across the nation who never even had a proper Christian burial. Please join us in Milwaukee or Madison this Saturday to pray for our aborted brothers and sisters whom most of the world has forgotten. May our merciful God give eternal rest to their souls and those who have perpetrated these crimes against them.

In Madison, please join us for Holy Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Michael’s in Dane, 109 S. Military Rd. After Mass we will process out to the gravesite of the aborted baby who was named Malachai for a brief memorial.
