State Treasurer Matt Adamczyk (R-Wauwatosa) announced today on WISN-AM’s Dan O’Donnell Show that he is running for the 14th state Assembly district to replace state Rep. Dale Kooyenga (R-Brookfield).
“I have a passion for trying to find ways to cut government and make government more efficient,” Adamczyk told O’Donnell. “And we’ve obviously had a lot of success with Governor Walker and the conservative legislators we have but, even with all those successes, simply put there is more we can do.”
Kooyenga is giving up his seat to run for state Senate to replace Sen. Leah Vukmir (R-Brookfield). Vukmir is running in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate in 2018.
Adamczyk has been actively pushing for the elimination of the state treasurer position. The amendment to the state constitution has already passed the legislature twice and the voters will have their opportunity to ratify the amendment in the April 3, 2018, election.
Tongue-in-cheek, O’Donnell asked Adamczyk if he planned to eliminate the state Assembly similar to how he eliminated the state Treasurer’s position after getting elected to the office. “Are you going to try to get rid of the entire state legislature, Matt?”
“That’s a body that actually does things,” Adamczyk said. “There’s a need there. Surely that’s not going away anytime soon. No, that’s not on the agenda.”
After the interview, Adamczyk released a statement formally announcing his candidacy.
“As state treasurer, I have proven that I will work to make government more efficient and cut government spending. I cut my office budget by about 75 percent and cut three full-time staff positions to save money,” Adamczyk said. “I am also proud to have worked with conservative legislators to save taxpayer money and would like to join them in the state Assembly to keep Wisconsin moving in the right direction.”

Wisconsin’s 14th State Assembly District includes portions of the Cities of Brookfield, Wauwatosa and Milwaukee. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton actually won the district over President Donald Trump, 49 percent to 45 percent, in 2016. Kooyenga won re-election in the district with 57 percent of the vote.
