Republicans at the Wisconsin Capitol are taking a victory lap after a new report shows just how much their tax cuts from the past eight years have saved people across the state.
Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said the new report from the Legislative Fiscal Bureau shows tax cuts have saved Wisconsin taxpayers $13 billion since 2011.
“Assembly Republicans have followed through on our promise to reduce taxes whenever possible,” Vos said. “Since 2011, we’ve lowered taxes every session that we’ve held the majority in the Wisconsin State Legislature.”
Vos added that the most recent tax cut plan, approved in the spring, will save taxpayers $2,000 each over the next 10 years.
“I’m proud that Republicans led the way in the recent budget process and reversed Governor [Tony] Evers’ plan to increase taxes by more than $1 billion,” Vos said. “In the end, the taxpayers in Wisconsin win with a stronger economy and a smaller tax burden.”
Evers has maintained that the tax cuts have hurt the state’s schools, lower-income families, roads and more.
The report states that the tax cuts during the previous administration of Republican Gov. Scott Walker reduced taxes by more than $1.2 billion in income and franchise taxes and economic development surcharges, $18 million in other general fund taxes, and $1.1 billion in property taxes.
Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills, said Wisconsin Republicans turned the state around during former Gov. Walker’s time in office.
“Not long ago, Wisconsin was in the top 10 highest taxed states in the nation. Now we are out of the top 10 and headed even lower,” Darling said. “According to the Wisconsin Policy Forum, our tax burden is at its lowest point in 50 years.”
