U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Nicholson, on Fox and Friends Wednesday morning, talked about his strained personal relationship with his parents who have actually donated to his political opponent.
“You know, it’s unfortunate we’re not in contact with my parents,” Nicholson said. “That’s a decision they made on the basis of their politics.”
Nicholson is running in the Republican Primary for Senate. If he wins the GOP nomination in August, he will take on incumbent Senator Tammy Baldwin (D). On Monday, CNN reported Nicholson’s parents donated the maximum contribution allowed to Baldwin’s campaign.
After the host apologized for asking the question, Nicholson further explained the family situation.
“That decision is something that people made on the basis of their politics,” Nicholson said. “I talked to my son the other night, we were talking about our family. He noted exactly how full and wonderful our family is. We’re surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins and many people who love us and integrally supportive of our campaign but, more importantly, are family.”
Nicholson has previously explained how he came from a Democratic family and later became President of the College Democrats. In the interview again, Nicholson said his experience as a U.S. Marine in Iraq and later starting a family changed his political viewpoint. He says he converted in 2008 when he supported Sen. John McCain’s candidacy for President of the United States against then-Sen. Barack Obama.
