From the Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs:
“Governor Scott Walker has ordered that the flag of the United States and the flag of the State of Wisconsin be flown at half-staff in honor of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
“In accordance with the order, please ensure that the flag of the United States and the flag of the State of Wisconsin are flown at half-staff at all state facilities beginning at sunrise on Thursday, December 7, 2017, and ending at sunset on that same date.”
Relating to a Proclamation that the Flag of the United States and the Flag of the State of Wisconsin Be Flown at Half-Staff on National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
WHEREAS, on the morning of December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy launched a surprise and unprovoked attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor;
and WHEREAS, the Japanese preemptive attack attempted to cripple the U.S. Pacific Fleet docked at Pearl Harbor, damaging or destroying 19 U.S. Navy ships and over 300 aircraft;
and WHEREAS, over 2,400 Americans lost their lives during the attack on Pearl Harbor, including 58 servicemen from Wisconsin;
and WHEREAS, the United States entered World War II after the attack on Pearl Harbor, where over 330,000 Wisconsinites served in the armed forces and countless others served the country at home by dedicating themselves to the war effort;
and WHEREAS, on this day we are compelled to remember Pearl Harbor and the valor, heroism, and sacrifice demonstrated by those Americans on that fateful day 76 years ago;
and WHEREAS, Congress, by U.S. Code Title 36, Chapter 1, Section 129, has designated December 7 of each year as “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day” and calls for its observance by flying the flag of the United States at half-staff;
NOW THEREFORE, I, SCOTT WALKER, Governor of the State of Wisconsin, by the authority vested in me by federal and state law, do hereby order that the flag of the United States and the flag of the State of Wisconsin be flown at half-staff at all buildings, grounds, and military installations of the State of Wisconsin equipped with such flags beginning at sunrise on Thursday, December 7, 2017, and ending at sunset on that date.
