State Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) announced Tuesday that he will be a candidate for Congress in Wisconsin’s Fifth District. The announcement came on The Jay Weber Show on WISN-AM radio.
“I thought to myself, you know, I’ve done a lot of things in Madison that I think put the state in better position,” Fitzgerald told Weber. “I’ve driven a lot of conservative policy over the last 25 years, and twelve years as majority leader. And I’d love the opportunity to be able to go out to Washington and make the same type of impact.”

Fitzgerald becomes the first Republican to announce his candidacy for the congressional seat currently held by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI05). Sensenbrenner announced on September 4 that he will not be seeking another term.
State Sen. Chris Kapenga (R-Delafield), former U.S. Senate candidate Kevin Nicholson, former Gov. Scott Walker’s son Matt Walker, former congressman Mark Neumann’s son Matt Neumann, and U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson’s spokesman Ben Voelkel are also considering running in the strong Republican district.
Democrat Tom Palzewicz, who lost to Sensenbrenner in 2018, already announced he is running. Waukesha Alderman Aaron Perry, who recently switched from being a Republican to a Democrat, has ruled out running for Congress when asked on Twitter by RightWisconsin.
