State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers is leading a crowded Democratic field of gubernatorial candidates, according to a new Marquette University Law School poll, but no Democratic candidate is pulling away just yet.
Evers received the support of 18 percent of those polled that were voting in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. The next closest Democratic candidate is Madison Mayor Paul Soglin at 9 percent. Undecided far surpassed the field at 44 percent.

The poll was conducted February 25 through March 1, 2018, and had a sample of 800 registered voters. Respondents were asked their opinions on a variety of questions, from gun control to their opinion of the governor.
However, the sample size was much smaller for those voting in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, just 243 respondents. As a result, the margin of error on that question is +/- 7.1 percentage points, or greater than the support received by former state Democratic Party chairman Matt Flynn.
While Democrats were undecided about their candidate, Wisconsinites overall were evenly divided about the incumbent, Governor Scott Walker. Walker’s approval/disapproval was even at 48 percent for both. More encouraging for Walker, 53 percent say the state is headed in the right direction, while just 44 percent say the state is moving in the wrong direction. The margin of error for those questions was +/-4.5 percent.
